The Government of India has amended its 2021 IT Rules to create a formal regulatory framework for AI-generated deepfakes, requiring social media platforms to label synthetic audio-visual content, ensure traceability, and deploy verification tools. The rules introduce strict compliance timelines, including a three-hour deadline for official takedown orders and a two-hour window for urgent user complaints, increasing legal risk for non-compliant platforms operating in one of the world’s largest internet markets.

Policy expert Rohit Kumar of The Quantum Hub indicated the compressed timelines would significantly increase compliance burdens, while Aprajita Rana of AZB & Partners noted the rules focus specifically on AI-generated media and content moderation obligations tied to platform liability protections.
