Intel announced plans to begin producing graphics processing units, marking a significant move into a market currently dominated by Nvidia. Speaking at the Cisco AI Summit, Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan said the company would expand beyond its traditional CPU focus to develop GPUs used in gaming and artificial intelligence model training.

According to Reuters, the effort will be overseen by Kevork Kechichian, executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s data center group. Intel has also brought in Eric Demers, a longtime engineering executive from Qualcomm, to support the initiative. Tan indicated the GPU strategy is in early stages and will be shaped by customer demand, positioning Intel to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in AI-focused compute.
