General Motors announced major advances in artificial intelligence and autonomy at its GM Forward event in New York City, revealing plans to launch a Google Gemini-powered conversational assistant next year and an eyes-off, hands-off automated driving system in 2028, beginning with the Cadillac Escalade IQ.

The Gemini assistant will be integrated across Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC vehicles as an over-the-air upgrade, offering natural, context-aware interactions that go beyond current voice systems. It will help drivers with navigation, messages, vehicle functions, and real-time information, reflecting GM’s deepening collaboration with Google Cloud.

Looking further ahead, GM’s new Level 3 autonomy system, built on its Super Cruise platform and leveraging lidar, radar, and camera perception, will allow drivers to take their eyes off the road entirely. Drawing on technology and talent from the company’s former Cruise division, the system marks GM’s next step toward delivering fully autonomous personal vehicles.
