Meta has placed a freeze on hiring within its newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The pause follows an aggressive recruitment drive in which the company hired more than 50 AI researchers and engineers from rivals, part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push to accelerate Meta’s position in the AI race.

The freeze comes days after Meta reorganized its AI division into four groups, including TBD Labs led by Alexandr Wang, alongside teams dedicated to research, product integration, and infrastructure. While described internally as part of routine planning, the move underscores both the escalating competition for AI talent and rising concerns over compensation costs tied to stock-heavy pay packages.
