During Apple’s annual shareholder meeting, CEO Tim Cook announced plans to reveal more about the company’s use of generative artificial intelligence later this year.

Despite being slower to adopt generative AI compared to competitors like Microsoft and Google, Cook highlighted that AI is already integrated into Apple’s products, with further developments expected. Apple aims to enhance device data searchability using AI.

Cook mentioned that Apple recognizes the remarkable potential of generative AI, leading to substantial investments in this field. He believes these efforts will open up transformative possibilities for users, enhancing productivity, problem-solving capabilities, and beyond.

“Every Mac that is powered by Apple silicon is an extraordinarily capable AI machine. In fact, there’s no better computer for AI on the market today,” said Cook.

However, a proposal by the AFL-CIO pension trust for Apple to be more transparent about its AI use and ethics was rejected by shareholders, despite gaining 37.5% of the votes. The AFL-CIO, America’s largest labor union federation, has raised similar concerns at other tech companies, advocating for transparency, consent, and compensation related to AI training materials.

Apple argued against the proposal, citing competitive reasons in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
