NVIDIA, a powerhouse in the technology sector, has announced a strategic partnership with data center operator Equinix. This collaboration, revealed on Wednesday, is set to revolutionize how corporate clients access supercomputing systems. The partnership enables businesses to directly own NVIDIA’s advanced artificial intelligence computing systems. This initiative offers a significant shift from the traditional model of renting these market-leading chips from cloud computing giants such as Amazon.com or Microsoft.
The new service focuses on providing companies with easier access to artificial intelligence computing capabilities, along with enhanced control over their data. This approach is particularly appealing to many large businesses that prioritize privacy and security. Unlike standard data center servers, NVIDIA’s systems often require specialized infrastructure, including unique networking cabling and liquid cooling.
As part of this agreement, NVIDIA has invested in training Equinix staff to expertly build and operate these advanced systems.
“We want to drive privacy because what we’re hearing at large customers is they are very worried about controlling their own destiny,” Jon Lin, executive vice president and general manager of data center services at Equinix, told Reuters in an interview. “However,” he continued, “being able to then figure out how to operate (AI data centers) efficiently and effectively — this is an entirely new set of capabilities that is not generally available.”
Corporate customers now have the option to purchase NVIDIA’s systems and entrust Equinix with the efficient management and operation of these systems, while still maintaining ownership. Both NVIDIA and Equinix have confirmed the availability of this new offering from Wednesday, although they have not yet disclosed any immediate customers.
